cpdf -draft in.pdf -o out.pdf
(This removes image objects, but not line drawings from a PDF)

Thanks for your answer but so it can't be done like in WORD?
Imagine a webbased invoice application which generates PDF invoices with the
logo of the company on it. handy when sending this invoice directly by mail
to clients but not handy when the owner of the site wants to print out
invoices because he will spend lot of ink that way. I am sure he will prefer
to buy paper with the logo allready on it and print the pdf invoices without
images.........

He could put the logo in a separate layer using OCG -- or
generate a version without the logo in the first place.
