making a plain bowl have a tartan?

Okay, so this may seem highly odd. Well, who am I kidding-- it is highly odd. In fairly short time, I would like to make a bowl of grits be in a Scottish tartan-colored bowl. I am fully aware that a bowl of all one color will make my life so much easier. I see two obstacles to using GIMP for this: 1) Shading of the bowl as it curves to/away from the light source. 2) Bending the tartan pattern to curve with the bowl. Now I useda could do some of this "GIMP" stuff pretty well, but then I sorta ran into a coma last year (or it ran into me), and now I'm in re- learning mode. Sat down to put some time in, and discovered that I have no idea how to do this. Do ya think it's even possible? What I'm looking for is something like "look into alpha channels"-type advice. Or "use http://www.blender.org/." Thanks!

Pour the grits out of the bowl. Pick the bowl up off the table if need be. create a transparent background big enough to hold the bowl. Put the bowl in the new frame. Next make the tartan half transparent and place over the bowl. There is a distortion filter use that to tuck the tartan layer to fit the bowl. Use tranparent gradients to shadow the bowl. Put the grits back in the bowl and set the bowl back on the table. At least that is how I would start. Dave
