Thanks John. I forgot to specify: gimp 2.6.5 for Windows Bernard "John K. In the main gimp window go to "Windows" -> "Recently Closed Dock" and with a bit of good fortune there will be an entry for "layers,channels,paths..." click on it to restore. if there is no entry then 2. Reinstalling did not work because the settings are help in "Documents and Settings" -> "Administrator" -> ".gimp-2.6" (should be there - but check in all "user" accounts). Delete this folder (.gimp-2.6) then restart Gimp and the folder will be recreated with default settings. or make your own 3. Any dock can be created from the gimp "Windows" -> "Dockable Dialogs" menu. A bit of a 'pita' to do. The floating docks can be joined together by dragging one to the bottom of another but difficult to describe in words. some good advice here http://meetthegimp.org/episode-2-setting-up-the-gimp/ this is for gimp ver. 2.4 but still valid, also look at the update episode 66 Again old but deals with adding docks - a you-tube video http://tinyurl.com/amr2fm -- rich

Thanks a lot rich. I applied the first with success. I had experienced all sorts of bizarre window "behaviour" and start-up delays since first installing 2.6.1..but have now deleted the folder mentioned here, and all is well again. Thanks.

Since gimp 2.2.x days I have always consolidated the 2 floats into one so I have an image window and all the tools in another. From memory there was no "restore closed docks" in earlier versions of gimp, so if you did close the right hand window you were in a mess unless you knew how to restore or combine them. Although I don't have exactly the same set-up, I still think option 3 is worth a look. http://meetthegimp.org/episode-2-setting-up-the-gimp/ -- rich
