creating a new image container

I have upgraded my OS and as such got an upgrade of Gimp. In the old days when I wanted to work on a small portion of an image, I cut it out and copied to to clipboard. Went of 'file' and 'new' and 'open'. The new image was the size of clipboard piece. With Gimp 3 when I copy the selected section for the old image the new image is created the same size as the original. When I paste the selection into the new workarea, it is the size selected. But now I have a very large border. Am I missing something in the upgrade to Gimp 3 when I read the action menu?

First things first. There's no Gimp 3. Current stable version is 2.6.3 As for your problem - you can do it like this: 1. select and copy to clipboard 2. click file->create->from clipboard (or click shift+ctrl+v) This should resolve your problem :)
