'Layers" tab no worky. Used to...

Hi all,
1st off, let me say that I'm not a GIMP developer by any means,
but as far as just being an end-user, I am fairly experienced. My
issue is with the "Layers" section. It just, out of the blue, stopped
showing ANY layers. I hit "select all"-copy-"paste as new layer"
several times... nothing. I tried selecting smaller portions. When
they were pasted, they showed up, but no layers did. The "Layers"
section is just blank, even if I click another tab then come back. I
thought "That's odd" so I uninstalled, and reinstalled the GIMP.
Since it still wasn't working, uninstalled/reinstalled again. Once
from the GIMP site, once from some other site that Google turned up.
I am running Windoze Vista on a 3-month-old laptop and GIMP
2.6.1.
Any help please would be appreciated. If this has already been
asked/answered but not found in my searching, please just provide the
link to the discussion. I hate to do/ask this, but could any help
responses be emailed to schoolofhardknox AT gmail DOT com. Hello,
spammers, welcome to my inbox, since I'm publicly putting my email
address out there on a newsgroup. The reason for this laughable
request is that tomorrow I'm going to start a hospital program (as a
patient) that will consume my week, so I won't get a chance to check
back for a LONG time.
Thanks much!

Asking for that removes the incentive for answering (contributing to the group) AND adds to the inconvenience by asking someone to switch to another application and mode of working. You can't expect people to do more for less. Also, asking people to send information to you for your exclusive benefit detracts from the value of the group. More than fair that I shouldn't ask folks to email me-- don't know what I was thinking-- and I got back here MUCH sooner than expected anyway. But I know nothing about channels, don't think I ever did. It looks like this and always does (when that tab is selected), whether there actually ARE multiple layers or not, even if I use the menus to make a new solid-color layer: http://picasaweb.google.com/schoolofhardknox/GIMPed#5263448849380934434 So let's try this approach: if layers are working for YOU in 2.6.1 simply add a "Yeah they work" in this thread, please. I've now uninstalled, downloaded from a different site, and reinstalled 4 times. OR, is there anyplace I could grab a copy of an older, non- this-user-is-a-moron GIMP? ;-) Thanks much!!!

I've taken a note to learn about channels, thanks for the tip. That pic was only a real fast job, but thanks anyways! Well, I took your good suggestion and installed the GIMP on my parents' 'puter. Layers worked fine there. "That's odd," I thought, so I came back to my brand-new Windows Vista laptop (with no tablet ever) and re-installed 2.6.2. SAME thing. I even started a new image, using all white as the background. Then I added a new layer which was black. The layers tab still is empty. Yet I could turn the image back to white by choosing Edit->Undo. Take a look here: http://picasaweb.google.com/schoolofhardknox/GIMPed#5264211365261339458 So does anybody else have the layers dialog running fine on Windows Vista with Gimp 2.6.2? I installed GIMP 2.0.5 from that site and half and hour later, I've been running into all kinds of GTK hell, so I'll spend my time learning about channels until someone else with Vista & GIMP 2.6.2 says the layers tab works/doesn't work for them, I guess. Thanks for the input!

AFAIK there have been some reports of disabled auto follow mode for the layers dialog - this is a button there. So far, there has been no indication of any reason for this. Are Vista users getting trained to hit buttons in the upper right of a dialog window? Regards, Michael
