I have an IP4000 and use Gutenprint but I installed the printer as a
postscript printer and the colors are just fine.

Thanks, that solved it.

When I initially configured the printer in the Gutenprint dialog I made
the "mistake" of intuitively selecting my printer from the huge list of
available printers. I've changed it to Adobe Postscript and everything is
working fine now.
