I got Gimp 2.62 for my daughter at college. I thought that it would be ok since we could not afford Photoshop. But it won't print on my computer. I have Windows XP and use a Epson Stylus CX3200 printer. I read that there is a problem with Printing Gimp. Another thing. The standard output of Gimp is a Gimp specific format, .xcf. GImp seems to say that no other format for output will carry all the data of the image. But I don't see .xcf as a standard format and it will not print out on another printer I have when I save a file as .xcf. What format should I use to get most of the image data? Thank you Hubert Hickey

I can't help you with the printing. The .xcf format is The GIMP's native format. This is what you use as you create/manipulate images. However, when you save the image, you want to consider two things: 1. What format do you want the image in? If you want GIF or JPEG, save it in that format. 2. Do you want to do further manipulation of the image (perhaps at a later date)? Then also save it in the native .xcf format. I'm not sure if you even need to use the native format for all things. Layers is one example of a HIMP feature that is supported in the native format only. Hope this help, > Thank you > Hubert Hickey

These are still good for printing, so save in .bmp, .psd, .jpg ...... for printing on another machine. Gimp shows its linux roots when saving so, when you 'save-as' make sure you type in the full name including the extension eg. image.jpg Since you seem to be using windows, What you need for printing is the windows port of gutenprint. It allows resizing and positioning of the image for printing. Get it from http://webblog.ru/Dickobraz The link goes to a rapidshare download but the zip file is only 2 MB so wait and be patient. The list of supported printers from sourceforge shows the CX3200 so it should work on your setup. A few(old) pointers on setting up at http://usera.ImageCave.com/tpcug2005/gutenprint.jpg -- rich

What format should I use to get most of the image > data? > Thank you > Hubert Hickey Saving in a format other than .xcf eliminates the layers and history of an edited image, so you can't go back and "undo" what you might have done with it if you want to, and if you want to do more editing, it's like starting from scratch with a new image. So, you should keep a current .xcf copy of any image you might want to go back to. However, you aren't restricted to one format at the exclusion of others. You can use the "Save As" function to save a second copy in the format you need for printing. If your favorite image-printing program gives you a choice, it's usually best to "Save As" in a lossless format like PNG or TIFF, rather than .jpg. Jpeg compression almost always results in the loss of image details, and the losses multiply each time a jpeg is loaded and a new copy is created. The non-jpeg file will be bigger, but the image will look better when printed. Sorry I can't help you with a specific suggestion for Windows printing. I've never used Windows XP - never wanted to, probably never will. There are several reasons why, but that's a discussion for another newsgroup. TJ

So, you should keep a current .xcf copy of any image you might want to go back to. However, you aren't restricted to one format at the exclusion of others. Printing and images

I'm not sure if it is the only format that maintains layer info, etc. - but it could be :-) Best Regards,

The current version of GIMP is 2.6.3. Printing has improved
considerably in this release.

The controls for the position of the image on the page still don't work. 2.6.2 had already fixed the image scaling problem. I use Gutenprint in Linux for printing and installed my printer as a postscript printer under Gutenprint. You might be able to do the same things under windows as the standard way of printing does not work as well.
