Hi, i love Gimp. But with the last release isn't so funny to work. It continues to crash, always if i paint for a while. I'm not only in worry for this version, but angry too. Instead to consolidate old commands and to implement the endless and hopeless promised 16 Bit update, i think that at the programmers misses some collaborative agreement. Who the H*e*l*l uses Cinepaint, this poorly old and unstable application too? Guys, come on, its the time to unify to force and to build an extra -ordinary Photo retouching tool. Photoshop can go to H*e*l*l, i need GIMP!

My understanding is that odd release numbers are considered to be works
in progress - kinda the equivalent of beta releases. If you use enough betas,
you'll be having problems. That's what beta tests are all about.

I try not to insult people who are giving me something for free. If
something doesn't work right, or if the user interface doesn't fit my way of
doing things, I'll try do document it with as much detail as possible and ask
if I'm doing something wrong. (User error is always more likely than program
error. Even if I *know* it's a program bug, it's still more politic to ask
what *I* did wrong.) If too many people DEMAND changes to free software, we
might find that people don't want to work on it.

Would that not be 2.7.x for the numbering that would be beta?
Also I always try to follow thegolden rule: if it ain't broken, don't
fix it.
There are many ways of 'broken' and they will differ from person to
person. It could be that somebody thinks something is 'broken' if there
is a later version number available. Sometimes things are 'broken'
because you have no bugs to report.
Most of the time however 'broken' means that a newer version doesn't
have a bug that you experience problems with or that could cause a
security risk.
e.g. if a certain brush crashes Gimp, to me that might still nog be
broken, as I never use that. For somebody else it will be broken. What I
have learned is to do as little software updates as possible when it is
just about versions.
Only when I see that a newer version has a feature I would like, then I
go and do the update.

Nobody asks you to program. What you can do is to decument your problems
and let the people who do the deveopment know of those problems.
Developers can only repair things if they are aware that there are
problems. So file bugreports and requests.
Now these people would need details. The more details you are able to

will need details and as much as possible of them.
If you already would give details here, others can look if they have the
same problem and confirm that it happens. However as you are working
with Apple, it could be that it is a system related problem and then
nobody who has not the same hardware won't have the same problem.
Unless you let the developers know what goes wrong, they won't be able
to fix it. http://www.gimp.org/bugs/ Read that and also look if the bug

I've been using 2.6.3 on WinXP, so far so good. :-) Chuck -- Ramblings: http://drchuck1968.livejournal.com

> >I'm not only in > >worry for this version, but angry too. Perhaps its not clear what i mean: i use Gimp already for eight years and i can't realize to use another retouch -and paint program as Gimp. Gimp for me is unique ! (i'm not a beginner, only for information) > =A0<rest of rant snipped> > > =A0 =A0 =A0I try not to insult people who are giving me something for fre= e. =A0 Stop, man, it's ok. I'm generous too with the people on web, to say the true, i love it to help somebody other. How i said, it's mature the time to unify the forces and to concentrate all the resources of free photo retouching into Gimp, an very good application, instead to loss time with Cinepaint (very unstable, in fact its release never reaches beyond the 0.x limit, ) I comment this in a rough tone, because i've tried cinepaint for a while. It continues to crash, after a bit of painting. (this was four years ago, i've no feeling and pacience to try it again, and to use this 0.x -unstable application), gimp instead is very different. And it is simply better. You can't know that i'm ipercritic more with myself as with others, but sometimes its necessary to write the true. I paint with gimp, also then? What should i do, if not to paint or retouch photos with gimp.. I've used only a variety of brushes, a variety of colors, and this with the mouse too -i miss my wakom bamboo pad :** I dont think that this is not right! (no filter, no special effects, only colors and brushes- nothing else!) Perhaps is the X11 window system which comes in conflict with my main system, (X11 -not able to update fast enough the modifications on screen?) Guys, i'm here on the modernst Mac Osx, not on an preistoric pc- model! > something doesn't work right, or if the user interface doesn't fit my way= of > doing things, I'll try do document it with as much detail as possible and= ask > if I'm doing something wrong. =A0(User error is always more likely than p= rogram > error. =A0Even if I *know* it's a program bug, it's still more politic to= ask > what *I* did wrong.) =A0If too many people DEMAND changes to free softwar= e, we > might find that people don't want to work on it. I'm not programmer, and nobody has teached me how write scripts. But after already four months I have written my first scripts for my platform, Mac osx. Today i use to write scripts and it becomes one of my favorite activities. But i know only Applescript, i cant learn different programming languages for every platform -adapt application i use. I've not the time to do this. (..and not cash to spend for Adobe software! lets say the true.) > > P.S.http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html Nevertheless, everything is to solve, but for the moment every problem seems much more worse than it is also, still thanks for your answer. > -- > Arthur T. - ar23hur "at" intergate "dot" com > Looking for a z/OS (IBM mainframe) systems programmer position

Nobody asks you to program. What you can do is to decument your problems
and let the people who do the deveopment know of those problems.
Developers can only repair things if they are aware that there are
problems. So file bugreports and requests.
Now these people would need details. The more details you are able to
give, the better. saying e.g. "it crashed sometimes" is not enough. They
will need details and as much as possible of them.
If you already would give details here, others can look if they have the
same problem and confirm that it happens. However as you are working
with Apple, it could be that it is a system related problem and then
nobody who has not the same hardware won't have the same problem.
Unless you let the developers know what goes wrong, they won't be able
to fix it. http://www.gimp.org/bugs/ Read that and also look if the bug
is not already submitted.
That is also the place to ask for enhancements.

It would help a lot if you can provide a reliable way to reproduce
this crash.
