Filling Object With A Textue

I hope this makes sense... I have a template which is a shape - an outline of a humanoid figure. I have a texture that I want to be in that shape, or actually to cut the texture to be the same shape as the template. I need to be able to place the template over the texture (the texture is an irregular pattern) and then cut out the texture around the template then remove the template layer and have the texture be the same shape as the template. Now, what I have been doing is simply erasing around the template. But there has got to be a simpler way to achieve the same effect. is there?
