Face detection and Recognition for embedded systems

Hi,
 I just want to know whether openCV is the best option for embedded
systems,
 Because i have a doubt that its time consuming.

I tried my own algorithm for face detection,eye and mouth.
But my eye detection and mouth detection is not accurate.I am just
manually changing the threshold for eyedetection.
How to make adaptive threshold for eye detection.
Suggest me how to do.

where the detection and simple and it works fast in embedded systems.

Suggest me how to find gradient magnitude and gradient argument there.
