Search Google 'linux replace images pdf' and try your luck there, http://www.qoppa.com/psindex.html might be a starter Have you thought of recreating the document in something like Scribus, where you can change images to your hearts content and resave as PDF? We're currently starting to discuss the Google Summer of Code 2009
projects for GIMP (tentatively; because no one knows who will be
accepted this year).
A PDF export plug-in (which could keep text as text, and paths and/or
vector layers [there's a patch in Bugzilla] as vectors) would be a
possible project.

A couple of possible workarounds. Use gimp for the edit. Save each page as a separate image. Import each into open office as images and export the document as a pdf. If you don't have openoffice then use your 'Office' app and a pdf printer driver, plenty free ones around. ---or--- Edit in gimp, save as a .ps (postscript file) Have a look on google for ps2pdf. The first hit will probably be for a free web based conversion service. or if you are using M$ somewhere in the first hits will be a command line app using ghostscript which converts ps to pdf. The snag with this is you will have to save each page separately because gimp flattens the image. Then recombine the pages. -- rich
